Reaper Turbopump

Project goals:
  • Design and build a turbopump for a 6 klbf engine to reach the Kármán line as a student team participating in the Friends of Amateur Rocketry Dollar per Foot Challenge.
  • Leverage printing with Velo3D as much as possible to minimize part count and reduce complexity.
  • Leverage industry for support (sensors, balancing, design reviews, printing, machining) as we were broke college students.
  • The concept was to create a simple design that we could easily make as students. In our naivety we created a highly complex single shaft, dual rotor velocity compounded impulse turbine, gas generator open cycle, two stage liquid methane and single stage liquid oxygen impeller TPA.
