Bridging Structure

Project Goals:
  • Build a bridge like structure that spans a gap between two posts.
  • Using the materials: poster board, fishing line, and wood dowels.
  • Design to withstand a strong vertical force.
  • We could use any tools we wanted but we could not exceed the amount of materials we were given.

Design Process:
  • We wanted to avoid the poster board being in tension so we designed it such that any tension would be held by the fishing line.
  • We designed it that the poster board will give a little to ensure that most forces would transfer than to be localized.
Finished Project:
  • The structure worked but, ended up yielding laterally at the top.
  • The structure ended up withstanding a 130 lb force.
  • Second strongest structure in the class!
  • In hindsight we should have added a lateral support at the top. It would have supported more weight.
